Hi, visitors!
Long time no see, but now things are starting to open up in Portugal again so we’re ready to restart regular blog posts. And this first one is about a very exciting discovery we have made recently!
Before Christmas 2020 I tried some amazing pizzas at my uncle’s house that they got from a take away, and I was really impressed by how good they were. I have been to Naples in the previous year and these tasted just like classic Naples pizza.
So, when restaurants opened again, of course we went there to try it out, and it didn’t disappoint. This place is called Forno D’Oro.

Firstly, the location of this restaurant is quite nice for someone who is visiting the city: although it is not within walking distance from the historic center of Lisbon, it is about 8 minutes away by car. I would say this is between 3.50 - 5 EUR by Uber depending on the time of day.
We went there on a Sunday night and the restaurant was quite busy - we called the day before to book a table and they only had one for 21h15. We arrived there by this time and still had to wait a few minutes, but nothing too bad.
Before jumping to the good stuff, let me tell you a bit about what we read about the restaurant. The chef, Tanka Sapkota, is a Nepalese chef that owns a few restaurants in Lisbon - 3 Italian and 1 Nepalese. The oven in Forno D’oro was imported from Italy (this part I heard, but was unable to confirm), assembled within the restaurant and then it was lined in gold, and this was what inspired the name of the restaurant (golden oven in Italian).

Now, about the dinner we had: we started by having their bruschetta and focaccia and both were really good. I have to say the bruschetta is probably the best one I’ve ever had!

As for mains, I asked for a prosciutto & funghi pizza (ham and mushrooms, I’m quite basic), and Sebastian asked for a very elaborate one that had smoked ham, a very strong cheese (that he ended up putting to the side since he’s not a cheese lover), and this one was called Transumância and it was based on Portuguese ingredients, which I think is quite interesting.

We were reaching about how the pizzas are made, and the pizza dough is fermented for 36 hours and the pizza only goes to the oven for 70 seconds, how crazy is this??
We were quite full already but we had to try a dessert as well. The tiramisu had an incredible look, but since I don’t really appreciate coffee and we were going to split the dessert, we asked for a chocolate tart, which was delicious! It was like solid chocolate mousse and it tasted heavenly.

At the end, the waitress brought us some beverages for us to try: limoncello, which is a classic alcoholic drink that we also tried in Italy (it’s a lemon liquor that’s very famous around Naples, Sorrento and Amalfi) and also another liquor which I don’t know what it was, ahah. I didn’t try any of them, Sebastian tried a bit of both. It was such a nice gesture that really made a difference.
Let me tell you that, from the very beginning, the staff has been the best! They were super welcoming and attentive. We were served by a young girl (whose name I honestly don’t remember) and she checked up on us the exact right amount of times, and she was always very nice and friendly.
In the end, we ended up paying 38.60 EUR for two starters, two drinks (Coca-cola and water), two pizzas and one dessert. And I will say that, for the quality of the food, the awesome staff and the nice ambiance, it was a very reasonable check.
Of course, we ended up there again in that same week with some friends and we could confirm it was not beginners luck, the restaurant is really really good.
So now we have a new place to go whenever we feel like eating some of the best pizzas in Lisbon!
